What it is

This is a 3-month long program designed for the ABSOLUTE beginner to oil painting. It’s also valuable for experienced oil painters who want to revisit their foundational skills. After the first 3 months, you’ll have the option to continue for up to 12 months at a quarterly or monthly frequency.

The program includes:

• 1x 90-minute private coaching session

• 3x per month virtual group sessions that consist of lecture, discussion, optional critique, and painting as a group

• 2-4 hours each month of pre-recorded or live demos and lessons

• learning alongside a small group (max of 6) with an online space for group discussion between sessions

• 25% off private coaching sessions and painting boosts when purchased during the program

The next cohort begins in March and runs through May. The schedule is TBD and will be based on everyone’s availability. All sessions will be recorded and available to watch afterwards.

Topics we’ll explore

We’ll progress through the skills you need to establish a strong foundation in oil painting - starting first with a deep exploration of oil painting materials and studio setup, and then moving into paint mixing, drawing with paint, and eventually full paintings. We’ll paint still life subject matter from life or from reference photos that I provide.

We’ll move very slow through the content, giving you lots of time for practice, exploration, and confidence-building. Even though we’ll move slow, we will be quick to paint and paint A LOT. Each topic will build on the previous topic. The timing and pacing of the topics will be catered to both the individual and to the overall group. Here’s a sampling of the topics we will cover:

Topic 1: Getting prepared for oil painting

• Introduction to representational oil painting - mindset, skills, and technique

• Supplies overview and studio setup

• Palette and canvas prep

Topic 2: Drawing with paint

• Drawing shapes with thin and thick paint

• Separating light from shadow

• Underpainting methods and practice

Topic 3: Color theory

• Introduction to color

• Color mixing and color charts

• Exploring value hierarchy

• 3 and 5-value paintings
