I can’t imagine my life without the mindful centering that Yoga brings me. Historically, yoga began as an activity where one would sit still and breathe. The asana practice (the poses) was created by yogis as a way to keep the body physically healthy. Now, the asana practice (particularly in the west) is what prepares the mind for the sitting still. The connection of the body, mind, and breath allows a focus and intention that exists completely in the present. It allows the day-to-day stress and anxiety to release. Over time, the mind can transform itself through the development of the yoga practice.
I began practicing six years ago with Carmen Board in Baton Rouge, La. Then, I had no idea that yoga would eventually embed itself into my daily routine. For five years I practiced casually until the spring of 2008 when I decided to train for the Honolulu Marathon. Shortly after I began training—as a compliment to my running hobby—I committed to a year membership at the Southbay Yogaworks in El Segundo, CA. There, I began practicing with Tamal Dodge. His sequencing of poses, soft voice, and witty sense of humor brought me to his class almost every day. It didn’t take long to fall in love with yoga. After my marathon, I was practicing so much that I decided to go through teacher training. I obtained my Yoga Alliance 200-hour certification with Tamal Yoga School in April of 2009. Since certification, I have practiced with Brian Kest, Vinnie Marino, Kathryn Budig, Annie Carpenter, Sara Ivanhoe, Angela Kukhahn and many others. My practice has been inspired by each of them, and my style continues to transform as I learn more. I am currently teaching Hot Vinyasa Flow classes at
Yoga Flow - Shadyside in Pittsburgh, PA and at the University Center at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA. My class incorporates an eclectic mix of rock, indie, and eastern music with flowy pranayama, asana, and meditation. I am open to comments, questions, etc. about yoga and healthy living. Feel free to contact me. Peace, Love, Grace, Namaste.
